USAA transfer limit [2026]: Complete guide

USAA is a member-owned association serving customers from the military, veterans, and their families, with products including checking and savings accounts. If you’re a USAA customer and need to send a payment overseas you’ll need to use a wire transfer.

USAA doesn’t publicly state its limits for overseas wire transfers. To check if you can send your high value payment with USAA you’ll need to reach out to a team member.

This guide covers all you need to get started – plus we introduce providers like Wise and OFX, as good alternatives to USAA for high amount international transfers with cheaper fees, faster transfers, and high limits.

Can you send high value international transfers with USAA? 🤔

USAA international payments can only be made using a wire transfer. USAA does not publish the limit for international wires, and asks you to call the bank to arrange your payment by phone.

If you don’t want to send your payment with USAA you may prefer an alternative provider like Wise or OFX. Alternatives like these let you send your money digitally without needing to call the bank within service hours, often with lower overall costs and faster delivery times.

Is USAA safe for large amount transfers? 🔐

USAA is a safe and trusted provider as long as you use normal precautions such as securing your own account with a strong password, and being mindful of scams and fraud. If you’re ever concerned about a payment, call the bank to talk it through in advance.

USAA large transfers prosUSAA large transfers cons
✅ Familiar service from a trusted name

✅ Talk through your payment by phone in advance

✅ No need to register an account with a new provider

❌ 45 USD payment fee

❌ Exchange rates may include a markup

❌ No digital payment service

USAA has a 45 USD fee for overseas payments, which can take up to 15 days to arrive. Wise and OFX can be better alternatives, with faster delivery, digital transfer services and lower overall costs – we’ll cover more on them later.

USAA high amount transfer fees 💰

The fee for sending a USAA high amount transfer is 45 USD. This is made up of a 20 USD USAA Federal Savings Bank fee and a 25 USD intermediary bank fee that’s paid to The Bank of New York.

USAA exchange rate for international transfers

USAA processes international transfers through its partner bank, The Bank of New York. Either USAA or The Bank of New York will set the exchange rate used for your transfer, which may include a markup – a percentage fee added to the live mid-market rate.

You can ask the USAA team member what rate will be used for your payment when you arrange it by phone. To check if a markup has been added you’ll then need to compare the USAA retail rate to the mid-market rate for your currency, which you can get from Google. Or choose a provider which doesn’t use a markup, like Wise, instead.

Exchange rate markups are a percentage charge, which can mount up very quickly for high amount transfers, and result in high final costs. Providers like Wise and OFX might be cheaper in the end as well as offering a faster delivery time.
